Arizona Opera takes Center Stage

Arizona Opera is embarking on a watershed and transformational next step with its Opera Center in the heart of the Phoenix Arts District, establishing a permanent home from which it will bring to life world-class programming. For the first time in our history, Arizona Opera will be fully equipped to welcome the community inside our doors—no longer limited by the traditional separation of seats and stage! To make this vision a reality, Arizona Opera has embarked upon an $8.5 million campaign to complement the already-secured City of Phoenix bond funding toward the project goal.

Arizona Opera, founded in 1971, has grown to become a world-renowned organization, producing mainstage opera and offering education and outreach programming to tens of thousands of children and families throughout the region. One of the few companies in the United States with a dual-city presence, Arizona Opera presents full-scale opera in both Phoenix and Tucson.

The company’s artistic history is rich with a blend of operatic repertoire, featuring verismo, bel canto, baroque, modern masterpieces, operettas, and American opera. On stage, Arizona Opera presents artists of world-renowned stature as well as those with emerging talent. Dedicated to our local economy, Arizona Opera prides itself on showcasing musical talent from across the state in our acclaimed orchestra and chorus.

Arizona Opera Center – A Foundation for the Future

For the first time in history, Arizona Opera’s full administrative, artistic, and production departments will have the benefit of working under one roof. The Opera Center establishes a permanent and cost-effective home for the Opera to service the entire state of Arizona. Consolidation has already allowed the sale of two buildings (one in Tucson, the other in Phoenix). The new Opera Center allows significant amortization of operational costs over that of maintaining multiple offices.

When completed, the new 28,000 square-foot-plus campus will include: a 6,500 square foot black box rehearsal theater (the largest in central Arizona); an education opera theater; practice rooms; costume, wig, and make-up pavilions; music and opera archive and library; executive offices; and an outdoor public pavilion.

The new Arizona Opera Center will allow the organization to expand its educational offerings for students of all ages, including families, schoolchildren, university students, senior citizens, emerging artists, adults, and educators. The Center’s unique, contemporary spaces have been designed to tear down formal theatrical boundaries and deliver ground-breaking experiences to audience members. Through indoor/outdoor, casual, and state-of-the-art performance venues, the Center will be flexible enough to accommodate a variety of guest experiences, including musical performances, film, and visual art. As a result, we will enrich and engage thousands of Arizonans each year in public events, programs, and performances inspired by and infused with the craft of opera.

The Opera Center, centrally-located in the heart of a reinvigorated Phoenix Arts District, easily accessible by light rail, anchors the cultural gateway, along with the neighboring Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, and Phoenix Theatre. Together, and strengthened by the presence of Arizona Opera, these Central-corridor organizations are the very fiber of our community, providing a wellspring of creativity and a record of community engagement.

To advance the vision for the new Center, Arizona Opera has embarked on the $8.5 million Raising Our Voice Capital Campaign.  The campaign seeks the support of patrons, friends, corporations, foundations and other supporters of the arts throughout our community.  Contributions to the campaign will be dedicated to construction of the new Center and be leveraged with bond funding from the City of Phoenix.  Funds raised will also be designated to ensuring the quality of our performances during this time of transition and to strengthen our financial position by enhancing our infrastructure.

Significant recognition opportunities will be available to donors, including opportunities to name theaters, stages, rooms, courtyards, and other spaces.  Commitments to the Raising Our Voice campaign may be structured over multiple years and fulfilled in the form of cash, checks, credit cards or marketable assets such as publicly traded securities or real estate.  In certain circumstances, gifts of other tangible property and certain types of planned gifts may be considered.

By leveraging their investment with City of Phoenix funding, supporters of the Raising Our Voice campaign will transform opera throughout our state—bringing the richness of this one-of-a-kind art form to thousands of families, their children, and individuals who would have never before enjoyed the opportunity. The new Opera Center will be an iconic structure that will add to the growing Arts District in Arizona. It will define our Valley and add to the rich character and culture of Arizona overall. Please join us in making this important commitment—for the arts, for our children, and for our future.
